By now, the sun was high enough in the sky that Grace had to tilt her hat and cover her eyes. With a lighter heart and a full day ahead of her, she took a leisurely stroll through town.

"Hey! Heeeeeeey!" shouted a voice behind her. She turned to find a girl about the same age as her toppling over into a nearby lawn. Without hesitation, Grace ran over to her.

"Are you alright?" she asked, helping the stranger to her feet.

"What? No. I'm fine. Fiiiine. See?" She brushed the dirt off of her bare knees. Grace got a look at her. Small, thin build, a bright purple dress of medium length, matching purse, long blue hair with lines of white highlights, and purple eyes. "Are you a new trainer too?"

"You could say that," Grace replied.

"Hey, it's great to meet you! My name's Molly. I got my Pokémon yesterday." She grabbed a Poké Ball from her purse and rubbed it against her smooth cheek. "We're already the best of friends."

"That's...great." Grace was a bit uncomfortable watching Molly's public display of affection for a Poké Ball.

"Hey, I know! We should have a Pokémon battle!"

"I don't think that-"

"Aw, come on. It'll be fun!" Molly interrupted, sending out her Pokémon. It looked like a small fox covered in brown bushy fur. It had large, round brown eyes, bushy tail, long pointed ears, and a patch of white fur along its neck. "It's kinda cute," Grace internally commented.

Grace grabbed the Poké Ball from her bag, tossing it. "Go, Eevee!" she shouted. A flash of light later, a Pokémon mirroring Molly's own Pokémon appeared.

"Eevee!" it cried, turning to its new Trainer.

"Okay, Eevee. I was hoping to get to know you better later today, but this Trainer wants to battle us right now. I know I'm asking a lot out of you right away, but I promise I'll love you like my own family," Grace said, surprised at her own words. With a short inhale, she continued on. "Are you willing to give it a shot?"

"Eev!" it shouted, turning its view onto the other Eevee.

"Oh wow..." Molly looked on in astonishment. She had never seen a Trainer bond with their Pokémon so quickly.

Grace pulled out her Pokédex, scanning her Pokémon.

> Eevee, the Evolution Pokémon. Eevee is of the Normal type. Eevee has an unstable genetic makeup that suddenly mutates due to the environment in which it lives. Radiation from various stones causes this Pokémon to evolve. Eevee currently has eight known evolved forms.

Grace checked for more information.

> This Eevee knows Tackle, Growl, Tail Whip, and Secret Power.

"Good enough," Grace said. "Okay, Eevee, try a Tackle."

"Eev!" Eevee dashed towards its opponent.

"Huh?" Molly was pulled from her trance. "Dodge the attack!"

With a thud, her Eevee was sent flying a few feet back.

"No fair! I wasn't paying attention! Eevee, use your Tail Whip attack!"

"Eevee Ev!" Molly's Eevee ran up to its foe and started lashing the Eevee in the face.

"Show it you're not gonna get whipped around! Use Growl!" Grace's Eevee made a feral, guttural sound that caused Molly's Eevee to flinch from pure fear.

"Holy moly, that is scary!" shouted Molly. "Eevee doesn't have much fight left in it. It's time for the secret attack! Eevee, use your Shadow Ball!"

Molly's Eevee started creating a black orb that absorbed the very light around it.

"Don't worry, Eevee. You've got this." Grace reassured her worried Pokémon.

"Fire!" Molly's Eevee launched the Shadow Ball attack directly at its opponent.

"Tank the hit!" Grace commanded.

The Shadow Ball attack came into contact with her Eevee and split into two, leaving Eevee unharmed.

"What?" Molly was shocked. "Why didn't that work?!"

"Because Ghost type attacks like Shadow Ball don't affect Normal types like Eevee." Grace answered, remembering her gym battle with Fantina, a Ghost type Gym Leader. "Now's my chance to get ahead. Eevee, use Secret Power!"

Grace's Eevee jumped high into the air and landed on the other Eevee, which collapsed from the impact.

"Eevee, get up. You can still win this!" Molly's Eevee struggled to stand up before slumping back down to the ground. "I guess that's all you can do. Get some rest. You've had a good battle." Molly recalled her Eevee.

"Eevee! Eevee! Eevee!" Grace's Eevee was very proud of itself.

"Your Eevee is amazing!" Molly exclaimed. "I would love to battle you again when Eevee and I become stronger. Friends?"

"Friends," Grace answered.

"Yay, friends!" Molly cheered, hugging Grace tightly. "Oh no." She said, pouting, letting go of Grace. "I forgot to ask for your name."

"It's...Grace," she said, gasping for air.

"Oh, what a pretty name. See you around, Grace!" Molly dashed off, falling into a row of hedges. "I'm okay!" she said loudly, disappearing from view.

"Anyway," Grace said aloud to her still dancing Eevee. "Let's get back home and I'll fix us some lunch."

"Eevee!" it cried, as she returned her Pokémon to her backpack.

"Not even a Trainer for an hour and I've already made a rival. This will be an interesting quest," she thought to herself.

---

A half hour later, she returned to her home.

"Marill Mar!" greeted a small blue Pokémon, hugging her ankle.

"Hi Marill," she said, petting the family Pokémon. Remembering back when Greg's mother died, Marill was left with her friend in Pastoria City. It was nice to see it again.

"What do you say? Should I make us some lunch?"

"Marill!" It cheered, agreeing with Grace's plan, then toddling off.

She searched around the kitchen, but found the shelves were mostly bare, save for a few essentials. Apparently her mother hadn't gone food shopping yet. She settled on making rice balls with soy sauce. It wasn't a meal fit for royalty, but it would do.

"Time to eat!" she hollered. Marill barreled into the room as fast as its stubby legs and round body would let it. Grace released her Eevee." That means you too, Eevee."

"Eevee!" it jubilantly cried, wasting no time digging in to its rice ball. Marill wasn't as enthusiastic an eater, but it looked like it enjoyed its meal.

After lunch, Marill assisted grace with cleaning the dishes while Eevee explored the house.

"Eev!" It cried in alarm a few minutes later.

Grace hurried to the source of the sound to find Eevee stuck behind the living room couch. "What are we gonna do with you? "she asked, picking Eevee up. "Let's go outside and get some fresh air."

Grace, Marill, and Eevee stepped outside into he back yard. There was a swing set and a sandbox. Grace walked over and plopped onto a swing and sat there, watching the two Pokémon play into the late afternoon.

---

At dusk, Grace heard the sound of the front door opening. "I guess mom's home from work," she stated.

"Marill Mar!" Marill took off for the front door. Eevee stayed close to Grace.

"Come on, Eevee. It's time for dinner." Grace said to her Pokémon.

Eevee closely followed its trainer through the back door. The sun was getting low on the horizon, casting an orange glow on Dawn Town.

"Grace, are you there?"

"Yeah, mom," she said, walking into the kitchen.

Her mother was wearing a red and white striped gingham apron with the words 'Dawn Town Café' emblazoned on the front. "I brought home dinner. I hope you don't mind cheeseburgers."

"Eevee Ev!" Grace's Pokémon chimed in.

"Oh? Who's this?"

"It's my new Pokémon," Grace replied. "Prof. Maple gave it to me. And yes, I would like cheeseburgers for dinner."

"It's really cute. And it's very attached to you," Grace's mother said, removing the white scrunchie from her long, dark hair. "You take good care of it. Your Pokémon are your family. Speaking of which... Marill! Meet us in the dining room!" she shouted. "I have burgers!"

A faint "Mar" was heard from the opposite side of the front door. Grace stepped over to it, and with a creak Marill raced into the dining room.

"He must be hungry," Grace said with a laugh. The three of them made their way to the dining room.

Her mother turned on the television.

"You're a kid now! You're a squ-"

"Nope." She changed the channel.

"...AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!"

"Nuh-uh." She changed the channel again.

"Trust in the Lord, for He is good. All you have to do is place your faith in Lord Helix and He w-"

She turned the television off. "Junk on every network."

"Anyway," she said, turning to the rest of the family. "Let's eat."

*THUMP* Everyone jumped up, startled. The source of the sound was a single window in the back of the dining room. Eevee returned to consuming its burger, not caring about the distraction.

"What was that?" Gracie got up and peered through the smudged glass. Looking left and right, she saw nothing. In the distance, a forest and mountain beyond town. Looking down, she saw a small bird Pokémon with dark blue wings lying on the ground. Running back to her bag, she grabbed her Pokédex, returned to the window, and scanned it.

> Taillow. The TinySwallow Pokémon. Taillow is of the Normal and Flying types. Taillow courageously stands its ground against foes, however strong they may be. This gutsy Pokémon will remain defiant even after a loss. On the other hand, it cries loudly if it becomes hungry.

"This is one tough bird," she said, watching the Taillow stagger about dizzily before getting up and flying off. "It flew off just like that."

"Grace, your food's getting cold."

"Right." She returned to the table.

Mealtime over, Grace and her mom cleaned up the mess in the dining room.

"Which way do you think I should go?" Grace asked towards her mother, who was busy scrubbing the dining room window from the outside.

"Silly bird, hitting the window like that," she said, too busy to notice the question.

"Well, she's no help," Grace muttered to herself. Making her way to the living room sofa and pulling out her Pokédex, she opened its map function. "According to this..." she went on. "the first Pokémon gym is in Mercury Village. To get there..." she paused, reading the map. "I'll have to travel through Nightmare Forest."

"Eev!" her Eevee cried, grabbing its ears with its paws and covering its eyes.

"I'm sure it's just a name, Eevee," she reassured her Pokémon, petting it.

"Hey, mom! I'm just about ready to go!"

"Wait a moment, honey! I have a couple of things to give you."

Her mother disappeared from the view of the now clean window. Grace heard the front door opening and closing. Her mother passed by the living room and went upstairs.

"I wonder what she's getting," she said to her Eevee, which decided to rest on her lap.

A few minutes later, her mother walked into the living room carrying a few things, most notably a pink frilly dress coated in ribbons. Grace turned her nose up in disgust at the dress.

"Now honey, don't be like at. Every girl needs to look her best sometimes."

Not wanting to argue, she reluctantly accepted the dress and placed it into her bag.

"Dear, it comes with shoes." she added, placing a pink pair of Mary Janes into the bag as well.

Grace didn't know what to think. She didn't even know shoes could come in that color.

"Now here's a few things to get you started," she said.

She handed Grace a box of matches, a flashlight adorned with a pair of dark Pokémon with yellow rings across various sections of their bodies, and some money. "Don't spend it all in one place, dear. Use it in an emergency. And here's some food. It should last you to the next town." She handed Grace a few sandwiches. "And a cell phone. I have already added my phone number and Prof. Maple's number. Call one of us if you're unsure what to do."

"Thanks, mom," Grace said, hugging her mother and placing her stuff into the bag.

"Well, you better get going. The whole world is waiting for you."

"Eevee, let's go." Grace returned Eevee to its Poké Ball.

Opening the front door, she waved goodbye to her family and took off into the night, the full moon lighting the path before her.

She made her way to the edge of town to the entrance to the forest.

"Well, I guess this is it," she said aloud to no one in particular. She passed the threshold and ventured into Nightmare Forest.

"Hey, this isn't so b- ahhhh!" she shouted, stubbing her toe on a tree root. "I am really getting tired of this happening!"

Following the forest path, she made her way to a clearing. "This looks like a good spot to set up camp for the night," she decided.

A chilling gust of wind cut through the trees.

"Or maybe not," she said, looking around the clearing. "If only we could use one of these trees as cover. Eevee," she said, releasing her Pokémon from its Poké Ball. "Help me find a tree to camp in for the night."

"Eev," it cried. In almost no time at all, Eevee walked up to a larger tree with a knob sticking out. "Eevee!" it hollered out, calling Grace over to it.

"This tree?"

"Eev."

"But there's no way to climb it."

Looking somewhat annoyed, Eevee jumped up and hit the knob. The branches rustled and a vine fell down from above.

"Thanks, Eevee," she said, calling it back.

Using the vine, she made her way to the top of the tree. It was very different up here than appearance had Grace believe. The vine led her to a room with a stone floor and a fire pit in the center.

"This is perfect," she thought.

Gathering some fallen branches, she grabbed her box of matches and attempted to light a fire. She burned through twenty matches before getting a small fire lit.

"I don't remember my last journey being this hard," she said aloud. "Oh yeah. Chimchar lit my fires. Heh," she chuckled to herself.

"This is as good as I can manage for now." She set up her sleeping bag and went to bed for the night.
